Thom Yorke has released his second solo album, Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes, via BitTorrent.
The eight-track album is Yorke’s solo follow up to 2006’s The Eraser, although Yorke has released two albums with his band Radiohead during that time, as well as 2013’s Amok as part of Atoms For Peace.
Shortly before the album became available to download using the peer-to-peer file sharing software, Yorke put out a joint statement with producer Nigel Godrich that read: “As an experiment we are using a new version of BitTorrent to distribute a new Thom Yorke record. The new Torrent files have a pay gate to access a bundle of files. The files can be anything, but in this case is an ‘album’.”
Bittorrent uses a peer-to-peer network connecting users’ computers together to move large files more efficiently than standard downloads from a server. Explaining the reasoning for using this approach, Yorke and Godrich said: “It’s an experiment to see if the mechanics of the system are something that the general public can get its head around .. If it works well it could be an effective way of handing some control of internet commerce back to people who are creating the work. Enabling those people who make either music, video or any other kind of digital content to sell it themselves. Bypassing the self elected gate-keepers. If it works anyone can do this exactly as we have done.”
The sudden release follows weeks of visual clues left on the Radiohead frontman’s Twitter and Tumblr. Many fans presumed the images of barren forests and cryptic scribbles linked to a forthcoming Radiohead album, as Yorke announced on Wednesday that the band were two days into laying down overdubs in the studio. However, these teasers could have been alluding to this brand new solo album all along.
